CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team honored its five players in their final seasons of eligibility for Senior Day -
Caelan Jones,
Stuart McCallum,
Matt Meredith,
Neil Owens and
Robert Power - and Owens ended up going over 1000 points with a career-high 31, as the Stags took a 90-77 win over Pomona-Pitzer in a Sixth Street Rivalry game on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
With the win, CMS moves to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the SCIAC, clinching a bid in the league tournament. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 13-10 overall and 7-7 in SCIAC.
Owens spent his undergraduate years at Redlands, and had his career-high of 27 points against CMS twice, but was able to set a new career best by making eight straight free throws in the closing minutes. Prior to setting his career-high, Owens knocked down a huge three-pointer with 3:52 to go, to stretch the lead from six to nine at 75-66. Meredith then followed with a three-point play to make it a 12-point lead with 3:24 left, and the Stags were able to hold on the rest of the way.
CMS had to repeatedly hold off the Sagehens in the second half. A jumper from
AJ Rohosy gave CMS a 53-41 lead, but Pomona-Pitzer came all the way back to tie it 58-58 on a Joe Cookson three-pointer. After a
Caelan Jones lay-up put the Stags ahead 70-58, the Sagehens got back to within 72-66, before Owens stopped the run with his three.
Jones finished with 21, including 5-7 from three-point territory, while Meredith was in double figures for the first time this season with 11, to go along with six rebounds and six steals, as the three senior starters combined for 63 of the CMS 90 points.
Rohosy, who came in averaging over 25 points per game in SCIAC contests, was double-teamed throughout the first half and did not attempt a shot, but had six assists at the half. He nearly ended up with a triple-double with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, as the two starting forwards for the Stags, including Meredith, combined for 14 of the team's 21 assists.
CMS will be back in action with three road games to close out the regular season, traveling to Caltech on Monday, Cal Lutheran on Wednesday and Chapman on Saturday.
