Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. -
AJ Rohosy had 21 points in 21 minutes to lead five players in double figures as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team scored 54 points in the first half on its way to a 90-68 win over Caltech on Monday evening at Braun Gymnasium.
With the win, CMS moves to 17-6 overall and 11-3 in the SCIAC and stays in the race for at least a share of the regular season title. Caltech remains winless at 0-23 overall and 0-14 in league play.
The Stags are currently third in the standings, one game behind co-leaders Cal Lutheran and Redlands at 12-2, but travels to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday with a chance to pull even with the Kingsmen, an then closes on Saturday at Chapman. Wins in both games, and a Redlands loss to either fifth-place Chapman or fourth-place Whittier, would leave CMS in potentially a three-way tie for first.
The Stags needed a little while to get going just two days after winning an emotional Sixth Street Rivalry game over Pomona-PItzer on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer. The Stags were behind 19-13 to Caltech midway through the first half, before a 13-0 run put CMS ahead to stay.
Neil Owens knocked down a three-pointer to pull CMS to within 19-18 before
James Frye put the Stags up 20-19 with a layup.
Robert Power followed with a jumper and
Cahal Connolly capped the run with a layup to put CMS ahead by seven.
Owens,
Reid Jones and Rohosy tallied baskets as CMS closed the first half on an 8-0 run to extend the lead up to 54-33 at intermission. Rohosy added another basket and Power knocked down a three-pointer to start the second half and make it another 13-0 run, overlapping both halves, to push the lead up to 26. The Stags were able to cruise from there, giving playing time to 15 players on the day to try to keep everyone fresh for the closing stretch of the regular season.
Reid Jones finished with 14 points,
Cahal Connolly had 12,
Matt Meredith had 11 points with one field goal attempt, shooting 1-1 from the floor and 9-9 from the line, and Owens finished with 10.
CMS will head to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday hoping to pull even with the Kingsmen in the standings for second place, after falling at home to CLU earlier this year. The road team has won the last four meetings between the teams, with Cal Lutheran winning at Roberts Pavilion last year, and CMS winning in Thousand Oaks twice, once in the regular season and once in the SCIAC Championship game.
