CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team rolled to a 16-7 win over Concordia Irvine in its first game of the day, but fell in a tight 12-11 decision to Azusa Pacific in its first two games of the year at Axelrood Pool.
With the win, CMS moves to 2-6 on the season, including avenging a loss to Concordia to close out the UC San Diego Triton Classic in its last action.
Jordan LaCour had four goals for CMS in the Concordia win, while
Grace Clark and
Isabel Del Villar added hat tricks.
Caitlin Muñoz added a goal and a team-high three assists, while
Valerie Wraith and
Elise Power added two-goal games.
CMS broke the game open in the first half with four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead, as Muñoz, Power, LaCour and Clark scored in succession. After Concordia stopped the run,
Tatum Dwyer answered back and Clark closed out the half with a power play goal.
LaCour started the second half with two straight goals and Wraith stretched the lead to 10-2 and the Athenas were able to cruise the rest of the way.
Mason Spencer finished with eight saves and three steals.
In the nightcap, Clark tied the score with 1:07 to go 11-11, but Azusa Pacific was able to break the tie 13 seconds later for the 12-11 win on a goal from Laia Marsinach Ortega. Clark had given CMS a 10-9 lead with 5:04 left, but APU was able to score twice in a row to get back in front. Clark and Wraith each had hat tricks for CMS in the second game.
CMS will be back in action when it heads to the Tina Finali Tournament at Cal Lutheran next weekend.
