Matthew Robinson and
Warren Pham won 7-6 (7-5) to clinch the doubles point, and then went on to win their singles matches as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a 6-1 win over Trinity (Texas) in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Championships on Friday.
Advik Mareedu and
Josh Kim also had a singles-doubles sweep, winning their doubles match 7-5 at No. 2, with Mareedu winning at No. 1 singles and Kim at No. 6. CMS improves to 3-2 on the season with the win, including 2-0 in Division III matches.
Trinity won a 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles, but Mareedu and Kim were able to get a break at 5-5 and then held at love for the 7-5 win. That brought the doubles point down to Robinson and Pham at No. 3, who fell behind 3-0 in the tiebreaker, but then earned six points in a row to get three match points. The Tigers fought off the first two, but Robinson and Pham converted on their third try for a 7-6 win and give the Stags a 1-0 lead going into singles.
Mareedu quickly put CMS ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, and
Caleb Settles took a 6-1, 6-2 decision to make it 3-0. Robinson then provided the clincher for the third match in a row, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 to send CMS through to the semifinals.
Pham added a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 4, and Kim battled to a tight victory at No. 6, taking it 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
CMS will next face Case Western tomorrow in a match that will begin at 7 a.m. Pacific time (9 a.m. Central).
