MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team took the doubles point and won at the top five singles lines as it earned a 6-1 win over WashU in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Championships on Friday at the Leftwich Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS moves to 4-0 on the season and advances to face Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals tomorrow, after the Sagehens edged Johns Hopkins 4-3 in its quarterfinal.
Ella Brissett and Lindsey Eisenman opened the match with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, and
Alisha Chulani and
Rebecca Kong followed with a 6-3 win at No. 1 to secure the doubles point. The Bears won in a tiebreaker at No. 3 to try to take some momentum into singles, but CMS was able to take three straight set wins to secure the win.
Eisenman earned a quick 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to make it 2-0, and after the Bears got a point back at No. 6 singles, Kong finished off a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4. Chulani the took a tight 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 to secure the clinch.
The Athenas added a pair of three-set wins to tack on two more points, as Brissett came back for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, and
Muduo Zhou took a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 5.
The semifinals will get underway tomorrow at 1 p.m. local time (11 a.m. Pacific).
