CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team trailed Cal Lutheran 7-6 at the half, but erupted for 11 goals after intermission as it took an 18-10 win over the Regals on Wednesday evening at Axelrood Pool.
With the win, CMS moves to 9-8 on the season and stays perfect in the SCIAC at 3-0, while Cal Lutheran falls to 1-2 in league play.
Tatum Dwyer and
Valerie Wraith each led the Athenas with four goals, while
Grace Clark,
Elise Power and
Christina Marlow each had two.
Cal Lutheran led 7-5 late in the half, before
Jordan LaCour scored on a 6-on-5 with 30 seconds left to give CMS some momentum going into the locker room. Wraith then started the second half with two straight goals in a span of 47 seconds to give the Athenas the lead for good.
Isabel Del Villar converted with 3:12 left in the third to make it 10-7, and Wraith completed a third-quarter hat trick to make it a 6-0 run spanning both halves, and give the Athenas an 11-7 advantage.
Cal Lutheran stopped the run with 1:55 left, but Marlow capped off the third with two straight goals, the second coming with two seconds left to effectively seal it.
Mason Spencer had four saves and two steals, and saved two five-meter shots from the Regals to spearhead the CMS defense.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Redlands at 11 a.m.
