TUCSON, Ariz. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to break open a close game and take a 7-2 win over Hamline on Saturday afternoon at the Tucson Invitational games.
With the win, CMS moves to 12-3 on the season, while Hamline sees its record slip to 4-7 with the defeat.
Carter Bennett continued his strong trip with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in two runs, while
Blaise Heher was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored and
Andrew Mazzone was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Stags were up just 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the sixth, when Heher came through with a triple to set the table.
Slader Spoor walked and
Jack Potter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bennett then coaxed a walk to make the score 4-2, and Mazzone hit a two-run double to stretch the lead out to 6-2.
Dillon Martin then capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly.
That was plenty of offense for the Stags, as
PJ Wendler threw four innings, allowing two hits and two runs, and
Hamilton Finefrock threw four strong innings of relief to get the win, pitching to one batter over the minimum during that stretch, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Lucas Welch threw the ninth to finish it off.
In the first inning, Bennett and Mazzone had back-to-back singles, and Martin doubled down the left field line to make it 1-0. Hamline tied in the second, but CMS took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth after Heher singled and came home on an RBI groundout from Spoor, and Bennett had an infield single to score Potter, who walked and stole second.
CMS will close out the Tucson Invitational games with two games against Macalaster, the first on Saturday evening and the second on Sunday morning.
