TUCSON, Ariz. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team closed out a 4-0 trip to the Tucson Invitational Games with a pair of wins over Macalester by similar scores, winning on Saturday night 18-4 and then coming back on Sunday afternoon for a 17-4 win.
With the wins, CMS now stands at 14-3 on the season, with 10 wins in a row since falling in the series opener to Chapman 4-1 on Feb. 28. Macalester now stands at 1-5 on the young season.
On Saturday night,
Carter Bennett was 4-for-5 with five runs scored and three RBI, while
Max Pemberton was 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBI.
Andrew Mazzone was 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple and four RBI. On the mound,
Matthew Bergan pitched four innings, striking out five and allowing one earned run, and
Andrew Blackett threw two shutout innings, striking out three.
CMS started the game strong, putting up three runs in the first inning.
Jack Potter began with a walk and was driven in by a triple from Bennett.
Dillon Martin added an RBI single to score Bennett, and a sacrifice fly by
Bryce Didrickson brought Martin home, giving the Stags an early 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Stags extended their lead to 5-0 on a Mazzone two-run homer, and
Max Pemberton added a two-run homer in the third to stretch the lead to 7-1.
In the seventh inning, Bennett and Mazzone each hit triples, driving in three runs to extend the lead to 11-2. In the ninth inning, CMS capped off the game with a seven-run explosion, highlighted by a three-RBI single from Pemberton, finishing with a commanding 18-4 victory.
On Sunday,
Nate Seluga was 4-for-4 and Mazzone was 3-for-3 with a homer, while
Charlie Kalil added a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI.
In the first inning, a sacrifice fly from Martin gave the Stags an early 1-0 lead, while Seluga doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kalil in the second to make it 2-0. The third inning was pivotal for the Stags as they scored seven runs to build a commanding 9-1 lead. Mazzone and Martin had back-to-back hits to start the rally, and
Alex Henderson and Potter both had RBI singles, before Martin capped it off with an RBI single, his second hit of the inning.
Mazzone went yard for the second straight game in the fifth to stretch the lead to 10-1, and Kalil had a two-run single and
Keegan Cabrera added a three-run triple as part of a six-run sixth that pushed the lead to 17-4 and enforced the 10-run rule.
Potter finished 3-for-5 and Henderson was 2-for-3 as part of the 18-hit attack. Perry opened the game for the Stags and threw a scoreless first before
Aaron Herst came on to throw three innings and get the win.
Ethan Hemby,
Charlie Hynes and
Max Buchanan each worked an inning in relief to close out the trip.
CMS will be back in action when it returns to SCIAC play for a three-game series with Redlands.
