CMS Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Haverford

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Hannah Adams threw a shutout in the opener, and Caroline Cappetto and Maya Weigel-Murphy combined to allow one run in the nightcap, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took 9-0 and 4-1 wins over Haverford in a doubleheader on Saturday at Athena Field.

With the wins, CMS moves to 9-3 on the season, while Haverford slips to 4-6 with the losses.

Averi O added a two-run pinch-hit homer in the fourth of the opening game, which put CMS ahead 9-0 and put the eight-run rule in effect. Adams then came out and struck out the side to end it finishing with eight strikeouts in five innings of work, allowing three hits as she improved to 6-0 in the circle on the year.

O's homer capped a four-run fourth, that followed a Madison Gonzalez RBI triple and a Brooke Goodman RBI single. Delanie Stevens went 3-for-3 at the plate for the second straight game.

The nightcap was much tighter, with the Fords taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, before O answered with an RBI single in the bottom half. Emma Suh broke the tie with a two-run single in the second inning, and Stevens capped off the scoring in the sixth with a two-out RBI single, making her 2-for-3 for the game, 5-for-6 for the doubleheader and 8-for-9 for the weekend.

O was 2-for-3 in the nightcap to finish a 3-for-4 doubleheader. Cappetto threw 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and striking out two in her first collegiate start. Weigel-Murphy cam eon to close with 1.2 innings of no-hit relief to get the save.

CMS will be back in action this weekend when it returns to SCIAC play for a three-game series with La Verne.
