CLAREMONT, Calif - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team was tested by No. 8 Swarthmore, but was able to come away with a hard-fought 4-3 win on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS moves to 10-2 on the season, and remains undefeated against Division III teams, while Swarthmore falls to 4-4 with the loss.
The Stags had to bounce back after falling on all three doubles courts, but only had to dig itself out of a 1-0 hole under the new rules with doubles counting as only one point instead of three. CMS quickly found itself back even, as
Advik Mareedu moved to 19-0 in singles on the year with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1.
The Stags also earned straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 to get the four decisive points they needed.
Matthew Robinson and
Anirudh Gupta won by identical 6-4, 6-3 scores at No. 3 and No. 6, and
Warren Pham won a tight battle with Max Lindstrom at No. 2, taking it 7-5, 6-4.
The Stags will return to action tomorrow at home for a big battle with No. 3 Tufts, which is scheduled for 3 p.m.
