Second-Ranked Athenas Tennis Earns 6-1 Win over No. 10 Amherst

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Lindsay Eisenman, Alisha Chulani and Rebecca Kong each won in both singles and doubles as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 6-1 win over Amherst on Wednesday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

With the win, the second-ranked Athenas move to 8-1 on the year, and pick up their third win over a top-10 opponent, as the tenth-ranked Mammoths fall to 3-3 on the year with the loss. CMS has also defeated No. 3 Emory and No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer this month.

The Athenas took the doubles point with 6-3 wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Chulani and Kong were able to close out a 6-3 win at No. 1 for the first point of the match, and Eisenman and Emily Ing clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and then holding serve the rest of the way.

CMS was tested in singles early, falling behind on four courts, but Kong (No. 4), Muduo Zhou (No. 5) and Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (No. 6) all regrouped after falling behind 3-0 to come back for wins. Zhou earned a 7-5, 6-2 win for the first singles point for CMS, and Eisenman prevailed in a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 1 to make it a 3-1 lead.

Chulani then finished off the clinch with a volley at the net for a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3, giving the Athenas the fourth and decisive point. Kong came back after dropping the first set for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win at No. 4, and Cedillo-Vayson da Pradenne prevailed in a tight one 7-6, 7-5, dominating the first set tiebreaker 7-0 and then breaking serve for the win in the second set.

CMS will be back in action when it hosts No. 8 Middlebury tomorrow at 11 a.m.
