Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Athenas Water Polo Moves to 5-0 in SCIAC with Road Win over Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Grace Clark tallied six goals and Isabel Del Villar added three goals, two assists and three steals as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team stayed perfect in the SCIAC with an 18-4 road win over Whittier on Wednesday.

With the win, CMS moves to 11-8 overall and 5-0 in the SCIAC as it keeps pace with Pomona-Pitzer atop the league standings, which also moved to 5-0 with an 11-5 home win over Cal Lutheran. The two teams have a big head-to-head meeting coming at Axelrood Pool on April 2, which will likely determine the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament.

The Athenas scored the first four goals of the game, with Clark scoring on a penalty shot just 15 seconds in. Jordan LaCour followed a minute later, and after Clark netted her second, Elise Power made it a 4-0 CMS lead at the 4:17 mark. Valerie Wraith sandwiched a goal between two Poet tallies as the Athenas took a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.

Clark scored two of the four CMS goals in a 4-0 second quarter as the Athenas took a 9-2 lead into halftime, with LaCour and DelVillar also finding the net. Clark scored her fifth goal to start the second half and Del Villar added another to make it a 6-0 run spanning both halves to stretch the lead to 11-2.

After the Poets broke the 6-0 run, the Athenas went on another 6-0 run, as Christina Marlow closed out the third quarter with two straight goals to push the lead up to 13-3. The Athenas scored the first four goals of the fourth, with Del Villar getting her hat trick, Clark picking up her sixth, and Tatum Dwyer getting her first to stretch the lead to 17-3, before LaCour capped off her hat trick with the final goal of the contest to make the final score 18-4.

Caitlin Muñoz had a team-high three assists, and Power drew three exclusions. Tonanxochitl Ortega added two steals to help the CMS defensive cause.

CMS will be back in action next Wednesday, when it travels to La Verne for a 4 p.m. contest, and then returns to face Brown at home at 7 p.m.
