CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Caitlin Muñoz scored five of her career-high six goals in the fourth quarter, including a buzzer-beater to win it, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team rallied from an 11-7 deficit to earn a 13-12 comeback win over Brown on Wednesday evening at Axelrood Pool.
The Athenas also picked up a 20-5 win at La Verne in the afternoon, before traveling back to Claremont to earn two wins in one day, improving to 13-8 overall and 6-0 in the SCIAC. Muñoz also had a career-high six goals in the Brown win, after first tallying a career-high five assists against La Verne.
CMS trailed 11-7 early in the fourth after a goal from Ava Schoening before Muñoz scored two in a row to close the deficit to 11-9. Claire Poissonnier converted a penalty shot for the Bears with 3:10 to go, but Muñoz came right back with a goal at the 2:53 mark to close to 12-10.
Elise Power brought CMS back to within one goal with 2:09 to go, and Muñoz tied it with a lob shot with 1:30 left.
Natalie Stearns came up with a huge save with 15 seconds left, lunging all the way across the goalmouth to deny the Bears a go-ahead tally.
After a timeout, Muñoz scored her career-high sixth goal of the game with a rocket inside the right post as time expired to give CMS the dramatic come-from-behind win.
Grace Clark added three goals for CMS and
Valerie Wraith had two.
Wraith also had three goals and four assists in the opening game against La Verne, while Clark had four goals and two assists, and
Dara Schoolcraft and
Isabel Del Villar each had hat tricks.
Sydney Kroonen and
Tatum Dwyer also chipped in with two goals, while
Christina Marlow had three assists.
CMS jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and built a 10-3 lead at halftime.
Mason Spencer had four saves in the first half and Stearns added three in the second, while Muñoz had four steals to go along with her big day on offense.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Occidental at 11 a.m.
