CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Grace Clark and
Valerie Wraith each had four goals as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team kicked it into high gear after a slow start and took a 19-6 win over Caltech on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.
The win was the eighth in a row for the Athenas, and improves their record to 14-8 on the season, while staying perfect in the SCIAC at 7-0.
Caltech played an outstanding defensive game early to keep CMS at bay, as the two teams were deadlocked 2-2 in the closing minutes of the first half. Wraith then converted on a penalty shot with 2:58 to go in the half, Clark scored 22 seconds later, and Wraith scored twice more in the final minute to give CMS a 6-2 lead going in the break.
Once the ice was broke, the Athenas then scored 13 times in the second half, with Clark and Wraith scoring in the first minute of the third quarter to stretch the lead to 8-2. After Caltech got one back, CMS scored five in a row to pull away, with
Isabel Del Villar scoring first, followed by a goal from
Caitlin Muñoz, two from Clark, and one from
Jasmine Tang.
Tang, Del Villar,
Tatum Dwyer and Tanonxochitl Ortega each scored twice, while Del Villar and
Christina Marlow had three assists. Tang and Del Villar each had three steals, and
Angelina Tsai had three saves in the second half.
CMS will next be in action for a big home contest on Wednesday night against Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m.
