CMS Women's Water Polo Win Streak Snapped at Eight after Narrow 7-5 Defeat

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water team fell to Pomona-Pitzer 7-5 in a closely contested SCIAC matchup at the Axelrood Aquatics Center on Wednesday evening. 

The loss snaps the CMS winning streak at eight games and drops its record to 14-9 overall and 7-1 in the SCIAC, despite getting a hat trick from Elise Power. Pomona-Pitzer remains undefeated at 8-0 in league play. 

A low-scoring first half saw the teams go into halftime tied 2-2. The Sagehens initiated the scoring at 1:25 in the first period with an even-strength goal by Brienz Lang. Lulu Gaither extended the lead for Pomona-Pitzerwith another goal at 2:49 in the second period.

CMS responded with back-to-back goals in the second period from Elise Power, evening the score at the half. In the third period, Lang scored twice more for the Sagehens, but CMS kept pace with goals from Caitlin Muñoz and another by Power, tying the game at 4-4.

Pomona-Pitzer then pulled ahead with a goal by Paityn Richardson at 2:23 in the third period, before Muñoz tied it with her second to open the fourth, but Kaylee Stigar and Gaither scored 43 seconds apart to let the Sagehens secure a 7-5 victory. 

Muñoz had four steals, along with an assist and two blocks, to go with her two goals. 

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for an 11 a.m. game
