COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team used a 3-0 run to take an 11-10 lead early in the fourth quarter, but No. 19 Colorado College scored six unanswered goals to close out the game and take a 16-11 win on Sunday morning.
The loss drops CMS to 3-2 on the season, with both losses coming to nationally ranked teams. The Tigers open their season up at 1-0.
Amelia Ulmer,
Summer Matsik,
Maggie Griffis and
Grace Minturn each had two goals for CMS, while
Julia Ryan won 27 draw controls out of the 31 in the contest.
Ulmer closed out the third quarter with a goal to get the Athenas to within 10-9, amd Minturn tied it up with 11:19 left in the game on a feed from
Lily Bishop.
Ella Brown then put CMS in front with 10:12 to go, but the Tigers tied it with 7:08 left and then forced a turnover after Ryan won the draw to take the lead for good 33 seconds later.
Ryan continued to win the draws to give CMS a chance, but Cassidy Schnaufer had three saves in the final minutes to stop the Athenas from mounting a comeback.
Paige Morgan had three caused turnovers and
Kate Larson had three ground balls for the Athenas.
CMS will be back in action when it travels to Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest.
