Stags Advance to Stag-Hen Finals with 6-1 Wins over NC Wesleyan, Denison

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team stretched its winning streak to 14 straight matches as it defeated No. 24 North Carolina Wesleyan and No. 4 Denison by identical 6-1 scores on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. 

With the wins, CMS now stands at 14-2 on the season, undefeated since dropping a pair of 4-3 decisions to Division II teams on opening day (Point Loma, Concordia). 

CMS controlled doubles in the first match of the day, with Advik Mareedu and Josh Kim winning 6-2 at No. 1, and Caleb Settles and Brandon Vu and Matthew Robinson and Warren Pham taking 6-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Singles saw Mareedu earn a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1, which was followed by Kim winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 and Pham sweeping a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 2. 

Settles earned a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 5 for the fifth CMS point, taking the first-set tiebreaker 12-10 and the second set tiebreaker 7-4. Robinson then took a 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 win at No. 3 for the final CMS point. 

In the nightcap, doubles were split at one apiece after Settles and Vu won 6-3 at No. 2, and Robinson and Pham came through with a 6-4 win at No. 2 to give CMS the 1-0 lead heading into singles. 

Mareedu again earned the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, and Kim earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 to put CMS on the edge of the clinch. Anirudh Gupta earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 to secure the win, and Tarm Rojanasoonthon followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4. Robinson took another three-setter at No. 3, winning 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 for the sixth CMS point. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts the Stag-Hen finals at 10 a.m.
