LA VERNE, Calif. -
Nate Seluga hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to break a 10-10 tie and give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team an 11-10 win in the opening game of a doubleheader with Redlands on Saturday at Ben Hines Field, before the Bulldogs came back to win the nightcap 6-3.
The split moves CMS to 17-4 overall on the year and 7-2 in the SCIAC, while it sees its 13-game winning streak snapped, dating back to a 4-1 loss to Chapman on Feb. 28. Redlands moves to 16-9 on the year with the split.
Seluga gave CMS a 9-6 lead in the seventh with a bases-clearing, three-run double, but Redlands was able to come back with four in the eighth to take the lead.
Blaise Heher coaxed a walk to lead off the ninth, and went to second on a single from
Slader Spoor.
Keegan Cabrera, who remained in the game after his pinch-hit RBI single tied it in the seventh at 6-6, tied it again with an RBI single in the ninth to make the score 10-10. Seluga then capped off the comeback with his third hit and fourth RBI of the day, grounding a ball through the hole between first and second to score Spoor from second.
Andrew Mazzone was 3-for-5 and
Dillon Martin was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Stags.
Hamilton Finefrock earned the win in relief.
In the nightcap, Redlands scored four runs in the third, and the Stags weren't able to come all the way back. Heher was 2-for-5 with an RBI single, and Mazzone had an RBI double to cut it to 5-3, but that was as close as CMS would come.
Kody Perry had a strong effort in relief, throwing two no-hit innings and striking out two. Finefrock threw 1.1 no-hit innings, striking out two.
CMS will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series with La Verne, beginning with a single game on Friday at Azusa Pacific.
