CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Hannah Adams and
Perri Derian combined on a shutout in the opener, and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team recorded 16 hits in the nightcap, as the Athenas swept two games from Carleton 7-0 and 13-7 on Friday at Athena Field.
With the wins, CMS moves to 12-5 on the season, while Carleton falls to 6-10 with the losses.
In the opener, CMS secured an early lead in the first inning, with
Kaili Aqui scoring the team's first run on an RBI single by
Averi O. In the second inning, the Athenas extended their advantage with a three-run effort.
Danica Stirling was hit by a pitch and later scored on a triple by
Rachel Sapirstein, and
Giselle Lai capped off the inning with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The fourth inning saw the Athenas add another three runs. Sapirstein scored on a single from Aqui, who then crossed the plate alongside Lai after a single from
Madison Gonzalez and another RBI single by O.
O led the Athenas at the plate going 3-for-3 with and two RBIs. Adams threw the first three innings, and Derian took over for the final four innings, striking out two, to get the win.
In the nightcap. CMS fell behind 2-0 but then scored nine straight runs to take a 9-2 lead. Lai walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, and then came all the way around from second on an Aqui groundout to second base, narrowing the initial deficit to 2-1.
The second inning saw the Athenas take the lead with a series of hits.
Lexie Stinson singled and later scored on a triple by Lai, tying the game at 2-2. Aqui followed with a double down the left field line, allowing Lai to score and push the Athenas ahead 3-2. In the third inning, the Athenas extended their lead with two more runs. Stinson doubled and scored on a single by
Mrdah Murali, who then advanced and scored on a walk and subsequent fielder's choice. Murali added an RBI double in the fourth and came home on an RBI single from
Emma Suh.
Carleton scored five times in the fifth to make a game of it, but CMS solidified its lead with four additional runs in the sixth.
Elizabeth Bell started with a single, followed by successive hits from Suh and Lai, who both contributed to the scoring.
Ana Federico's single drove in two runs, and Gonzalez capped the inning with an RBI single, leading to a final score of 13-7.
Lai was 2-for-3 for the Athenas, scoring three runs and driving in two RBIs, highlighted by her triple. Aqui contributed with a double and three RBIs, showcasing her ability to capitalize with runners in scoring position. Murali delivered two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, while scoring twice herself. Suh was 3-for-4 and scored twice, adding a stolen base to her performance. Stinson recorded two runs and two hits, including a double.
Caroline Cappetto pitched four innings to get the win, striking out 4 batters.
Maya Weigel-Murphy followed with 3 innings of relief, giving up 2 hits and striking out 4 batters to get the save.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts St. Olaf for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
