CMS Softball Splits With St. Olaf in Final Non-Conference Games

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Rachel Sapirstein and Madison Gonzalez each had two-run singles in a six-run sixth inning as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's softball team took the opening game of a doubleheader with St. Olaf 7-1 on Saturday at Athena Field, before the Oles came back and took the nightcap 4-3.

With the split, CMS moves to 13-5 on the season, while St. Olaf sees its record move to 9-5.

The opening game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, when CMS used eight singles to take control, including five in a row to start the inning. Imani Ferris led off with a single down the left field line, Megan Kho hit a single to right, and Danica Stirling had an infield single to third to load the bases with nobody out.

Sapirstein then went the other way for a two-run single, with a third run coming home on an error. Emma Suh then reached on an infield single, and after a lineout from Giselle Lai, Kaili Aqui put down a bunt single to load the bases. Gonzalez then hit her single back up the middle to plate two more runs. Averi O had another single to load the bases again, and Ferris had an RBI groundout to cap off the scoring.

Sapirstein was 3-for-3 with three RBI in the contest, adding an RBI double in the fourth to score the first CMS run. Aqui finished the game 3-for-4, while Hannah Adams went the distance to get the win in the circle, allowing five hits and no earned runs as she improved to 7-1 on the year.

Gonzalez had a two-run double in the nightcap to help stake CMS to a 3-1 lead, but St. Olaf was able to score twice in the fourth and once in the fifth and hold on for the 4-3 win and the split. Lai was 4-for-4 in the nightcap to account for half of the eight hits for the Athenas. Perri Derian allowed only one hit in three innings of relief, but took a tough-luck loss.

CMS wil lbe back in action next weekend when it gets back to SCIAC play, beginning with a home game against Cal Lutheran on Friday at 3 p.m.
