CMS Softball Falls in Extra Innings in Series Opener to Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team went to extra innings with Cal Lutheran in a battle of two of the SCIAC's top teams but came up on the short end of a 3-1 final in the first of a three-game series on Friday.

With the loss, CMS slips to 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran remains alone in first at 13-5 overall and 5-1 in league play.

The Athenas managed just four hits off of Cal Lutheran starter Ashlyn Flinchum, but was able to take a 1-0 lead early on an unearned run after Rachel Sapirstein singled and went to second on a sacrifice from Imani Ferris.

The Regals tied it in the bottom of the third, and then scored a pair of unearned runs in the ninth, including the third on a suicide squeeze. Hannah Adams took a tough luck loss, throwing 161 pitches over nine innings and allowing one earned run while striking out five.

Giselle Lai, Kaili Aqui, and Averi O each added singles for CMS. Flinchum struck out four the Regals, three in the first inning, to get the win.

The two teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader at Cal Lutheran tomorrow at 12 p.m.
