LA VERNE, Calif. -
Carter Bennett was 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI and
Andrew Mazzone was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI as the ninth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team bounced back from a 6-5 defeat to No. 2 La Verne in the first game of a doubleheader to take the nightcap 11-3 and win the series two games to one on Saturday.
With the wins, CMS moves to 19-5 overall on the season and 9-3 in the SCIAC, while La Verne moves to 19-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
In the nightcap, Bennett opened up the scoring with a two-run homer in the second, and after La Verne got one back in the bottom half, Mazzone homered for the third straight game in the series to put the Stags up 4-1. It was his two-run shot in the series opener on Friday that broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth and sent CMS on to a 9-4 win.
CMS wasn't finished in th third, though, as
Alex Henderson hit an RBI triple, and Bennett had a two-run single to give him four RBI for the game and make the score 7-1.
Dillon Martin had an RBI single in the fourth, and
Max Pemberton had a bases loaded walk in the seventh to make it 9-1.
Keegan Cabrera had an RBI groundout in the eighth to close out the CMS scoring.
Martin was 3-for-5 in the nightcap, and Didrickson was 2-for-3.
Hamilton Finefrock threw 2.2 innings of relief to get the win, while
Matthew Bergan started and threw 3.2 innings, striking out four, and
Aaron Herst threw 1.2 innings of relief, striking out four.
Lucas Welch pitched a shutout ninth and added two strikeouts.
In the opener, Mazzone started the game off with a solo homer in the first, and then put CMS ahead 3-2 with a two-run single in the fifth. Martin and Henderson added RBI singles to give CMS a 5-2 lead, but La Verne was able to tie it in the sixth and win it on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Mazzone was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Martin was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Kody Perry struck out three in 2.1 innings of relief for the Stags.
CMS will be back in action next week for a three-game series with Whittier, beginning with a road game on Friday.
