Athenas Tennis Prevails Over Caltech in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team was tested by No. 25 Caltech in its SCIAC opener on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, but the Athenas were able to defend their home courts with a 6-1 win on Saturday. 

The Athenas move to 11-1 on the year with the win, while Caltech moves to 5-3. 

All three doubles courts ended up in 6-4 decisions, with the Athenas getting the wins on all three. Lindsay Eisenman and Emily Ing moved up to No. 1 and prevailed there, Alisha Chulani and Rebecca Kong took a 6-4 win and No. 2, and Ella Brissett and Muduo Zhou took a 6-4 decision at No. 3. 

Zhou was able to dominate the latter portion of her match at No. 4 singles and come away with a 6-2, 6-0 win, and Kong earned a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 3. Eisenman was then able to prevail in a close battle at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory, and Chulani emerged with a win in a second set tiebreaker at No. 2, taking it 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). 

The final two courts went to three sets, and Celestina Cedillo-Yayson de Pradenne was able to come back for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 win at No. 5 before the Beavers got their final point at No. 6 (10-7 in the tiebreaker). 

CMS will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to No. 23 Redlands, for another top-25 SCIAC battle.
