AZUSA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Baseball team had five pitchers combine on 15 innings of shutout baseball, and seven different players hit home runs, as the Stags swept Puget Sound by identical 10-0 scores on Saturday at Cougar Field, taking the first game in eight innings and the second in seven.
With the wins, CMS moves to 9-3 on the season after taking the first three of the four-game series from the Loggers. Puget Sound slips to 7-5 on the year with the two defeats.
Bryant Smaaladen threw five innings of no-hit relief to get the win in the opening game, coming on in support of
PJ Wendler, who allowed two hits in three innings and struck out four.
Matthew Bergan went four innings in the nightcap to get the win, allowing two hits, while
Andrew Blackett threw one inning to get the win, and
Aaron Herst struck out five in two innings to close it out.
In the opener, the game was tightly contested through the first three innings, with neither team able to score. The breakthrough came in the fourth inning when the Stags opened the scoring with a solo home run by
Rider Gordon, followed by a two-RBI single from
Jack Potter, making it 3-0.
In the fifth inning, CMS continued to extend its lead.
Bryce Didrickson contributed with a solo home run, followed by an RBI single from
Alex Henderson, and a two-run homer by
Slader Spoor, bringing the score to 7-0. The momentum carried into the seventh inning as Henderson added a solo home run, further increasing the lead to 8-0.
In the eighth inning,
Carter Bennett came home a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly by Henderson brought in another run, enforcing the 10-run rule. Henderson finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Potter,
Andrew Mazzone, Didrickson and Gordon each had two hits.
CMS opened the scoring in the second inning of the nightcap when
Dillon Martin hit a solo home run, giving his team a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Bennett's double brought Potter home for a 2-0 advantage.
The fourth inning Saw the Stags break it open with five run. Martin started the rally with a double, and Henderson and
Nate Seluga each contributed RBI singles. Potter capped off the inning with a three-run homer, bringing the score to 7-0. In the seventh inning, CMS added three more runs to their tally to bring the 10-run rule into play. J. Potter singled and was driven home Bennett's two-run homer. Gordon added an RBI single with two outs to bring home
Charlie Kalil, securing the 10-0 win.
Potter was 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI in the nightcap, while Bennett was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. when it concludes its four-game series with the Loggers.
