CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior goalie
Holly Shankle had a career-high 20 saves, but the Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team was able to build a big lead early and hold off Claremont-Mudd-Scripps the rest of the way for a 15-6 win on Saturday at Zinda Field.
The win secures the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament for Pomona-Pitzer, which improves to 13-2 overall and 9-0 in the SCIAC. CMS moves to 9-6 overall and 8-2 in league play with the defeat.
The Athenas scored first on a goal from
Kate Larson, but the Sagehens scored the next seven in a row to take a 7-1 early in the second. CMS got back to within 9-5 early in the third, after
Hannah Conte and
Paige Morgan opened the second half with goals, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to convert the next three to put the game away.
Shankle's 20 saves surpassed her previous career best of 15, set earlier this year against Chicago. She had seven of her saves in the second quarter to keep CMS in it, and also added seven more in the fourth.
Amelia Ulmer had two goals to lead the way for the Athenas.
Julia Ryan had 11 draw controls, and
Grace Minturn and
Maggie Griffis led CMS with four ground balls apiece.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night for its final regular season home game against Whittier, before closing out the regular season at Redlands on Thursday.
