Athenas Water Polo Celebrates Senior Day with 14-3 win over Occidental

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team honored seniors Elise Power and Dara Schoolcraft prior to the game and went on to capture a 14-3 win over Occidental on Saturday in the regular season finale at Axelrood Pool.

CMS moves to 18-9 overall and 11-1 in league play, and will be the second seed in the SCIAC Championship, hosting third-seeded Chapman in a semifinal on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

Power led CMS with three goals on her senior day, along with Isabel Del Villar, while Schoolcraft anchored the defense from her central defender position and helped hold Occidental to just three goals, with Mason Spencer needing to make only three saves on the day.

The game was tied 1-1 early before the Athenas rattled off five goals in a row to take control, from five different goal-scorers. Jordan LaCour broke the tie with 6:11 in the first quarter, and was followed by first quarter goals from Valerie Wraith, Del Villar, and Power to make it 5-1. Caitlin Muñoz capped off the 5-0 run with the first goal of the second quarter.

After Occidental scored to make it 6-2, Power finished off her hat trick before halftime, sandwiching two goals around one from Del Villar to make it a 9-2 lead at the break.

Jasmine Tang and Tonanxochitl Ortega added second half goals for CMS. Wraith led CMS with three steals and two assists.

CMS defeated Chapman 9-7 on the road in the first meeting between the teams. The winner of the SCIAC Semifinals on Thursday will advance to Saturday's championship, while also earning a bid to the USA Water Polo Division III Tournament.
