CMS Women's Lacrosse Rallies From Behind to Defeat Redlands 12-11

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Kate Larson had four goals and Amelia Ulmer broke an 11-11 tie with 5:05 left to give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team its only lead of the game as it took a 12-11 win over Redlands on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field.

The Athenas trailed by as many as four goals, including 10-6 in the third, but came back to get the win and improve to 6-5 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC. Redlands drops to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in league play with the loss.

Holly Shankle returned from injury and had 10 saves, two of which were big ones from close range late to preserve the one-goal lead.

Redlands led 5-1 early and then took a 10-6 lead in the third, before Larson scored two goals in a 3-0 run, around an Ulmer goal, to make it 10-9 heading into the fourth.

Kaia Scott knotted the game up on a free position shot with 8:29 to go, before April Bryant gave the Bulldogs the lead back with 7:29 left. Larson tied it with 5:23 to go, and then the Athenas were able to set up the game-winner on a free position attempt.

Grace Minturn had the ball in position and faked the shot, and instead passed to a cutting Ulmer from the weak side, who took the pass and finished in one motion for the final goal of the contest.

In addition to the two Shankle saves, Summer Matsik and Natalie each caused turnovers to deny Redlands clears. Courtney Myers saved a free position shot from Minturn with 53 seconds left to give Redlands one final chance, and after a clear, Bryant was pressured into a tough shot just before the final horn that missed wide.

Ulmer and Conte each had two goals, while Matsik and Teare tied for team-high honors with three caused turnovers. Minturn and Kate Risse led the Athenas with three ground balls apiece.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday to take on Occidental at 1 p.m., which will also be the program's Senior Day, as Shankle, Teare, Taylor Daetz, Audrey Donahue, Maggie Griffis and Chloe Klein will be honored prior to the contest.
