CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Advik Mareedu prevailed in three sets at No. 1 singles to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team edge Pomona-Pitzer 4-3 in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Center.
The Stags stretch their win streak to 26 with the victory as they move to 26-2 overall on the season, including a perfect 7-0 record in SCIAC (their 19th straight undefeated season in league play), while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 14-11.
Pomona-Pitzer took the doubles point, despite Mareedu and
Josh Kim winning 6-4 at No. 2, but were able to get momentum back in singles.
Caleb Settles evened the score with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6, and Kim followed with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 to put CMS in front.
Matthew Robinson broke a 2-2 tie with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 to put CMS on the cusp of the win as the top two courts went to three sets.
Mareedu was able to come through in his third set against Drew Goldman, taking a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win after Goldman battled back to force it to a third. That took the pressure off an epic tiebreaker at No. 2, where
Warren Pham fell to Ethan Lee 16-14 in the third set tiebreaker, after having match points at 10-9, 12-11 and 14-13 while receiving serve. Lee was able to get the comeback win 4-6, 7-6, 16-14 for the final point of the match.
The two teams will meet again in the SCIAC Semifinals, with the winner advancing to take on either Redlands or Caltech in the SCIAC Championship match, which CMS would have the right to host as the top seed.
