CLAREMONT, Calif. - The third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's team dropped a tight 4-3 decision to No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer to close out the regular season on Sunday.
With the loss, CMS slips to 15-2 on the year and will be the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament, which would require a rematch at Pomona-Pitzer next weekend in the finals, if the two teams both advance.
The Athenas dropped the doubles point, but were able to get two quick singles wins, as
Ella Brissett earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, and
Bell Zhou captured a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Rebecca Kong responded in a big way after dropping her second set to come away with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-0 win give the Athenas their third point, but former national champion Angie Zhou was able to take a hard-fought win at No. 1 for the clincher, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 over
Lindsay Eisenman.
CMS will take on Redlands in the SCIAC Semifinals, with the winner advancing to face either Pomona-Pitzer or Cal Lutheran.
