Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. - The second-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned the doubles point and won three quick singles decisions to take a 4-0 win over third-seeded Redlands in the SCIAC Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, the Athenas improve to 16-2 on the year and advance to Friday's championship match, which will held in Claremont, either at top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer if the Sagehens win their semifinal, or at CMS if fourth-seeded Cal Lutheran pulls the upset.
Redlands battled on several courts, but No. 2 doubles was halted with the score tied at 4-4, and the Bulldogs won the first set at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The CMS depth was too much, though, as the Athenas dominated lines 3-6.
Ella Brissett and
Bell Zhou earned a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles, and
Alisha Chulani and
Rebecca Kong followed with a 6-2 win at No. 1 to give CMS a 1-0 lead going into singles.
Emily Ing took a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, and
Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne took a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5. Zhou then picked up an immaculate 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, just as Kong was closing in on a similar result at No. 3, but her match ended up halted with her leading 6-0, 5-0.
If CMS and Pomona-Pitzer meet, it will come one week after the Sagehens earned a dramatic 4-3 win in the regular season finale to earn the top seed and the right to host.
