COSTA MESA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team closed out the three-round SCIAC Championships with a solid 289 (+5) on Tuesday's final round, but settled for second place in the seven-team field at the Costa Mesa Country Club.
The Athenas finished at +16 for the tournament (295-284-289), well ahead (20 shots) of third-place Cal Lutheran, but couldn't catch Pomona-Pitzer for the top spot, as the Sagehens were steady the whole way and shot +3 for the three rounds (284-285-286).
Chistine Yu finished second on the individual leaderboard at -1 for three rounds to earn first-team All-SCIAC honors, along with
Esther Lee, who came in fourth place at +1.
Stella Cheng and
Jessie Kong were second-team All-SCIAC winners after finishing in 10th and 13th overall.
Yu capped off a strong three-round performance for the Athenas, with a 70 (-1) on Tuesday's final round, finishing as one of only two players in the red after a 73-69-70-212, just one shot behind winner Emily Chang of Pomona-Pitzer.
Lee had a 72-72-70 weekend to end up at one-over, and had a stretch on Tuesday's back nine of an eagle on 14, a birdie on 15, and a birdie on 16 to almost surge to the individual title. Her eagle was her second of the tournament, after also carding one during Monday's second round.
Cheng, who had her first-ever hole-in-one on Monday, closed out her tournament with 10 straight pars, shooting a 72 on Tuesday (+1) to earn All-SCIAC honors. Kong had an even par performance on Monday to help her come away with all-league honors.
CMS, which came into the SCIAC Championships ranked No. 5, will await a possible NCAA at-large selection to the national championships, which will be held May 13-16 in Williamsburg, Va.
