CMS Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Redlands into SCIAC Finals

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Amelia Ulmer scored a career-high nine goals as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team captured a 22-6 win over third-seeded Redlands on Wednesday evening in the semifinals of the SCIAC Tournament.

With the win, CMS moves to 12-6 on the season and advances to the SCIAC Championship game on Saturday, when it will play top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer, which also won its semifinal 22-6, over fourth-seeded Occidental.

Ulmer's previous career high was five goals, which she had accomplished three times, including earlier this season against George Fox. She had seven goals by halftime against the Bulldogs, before finishing with nine.

Ulmer scored the first three goals of the game to put CMS ahead 3-0 with 7:58 left in the first quarter, and Paige Morgan and Maggie Griffis followed with goals to make it a 5-0 lead.

Redlands scored the next two goals to get back within 5-2, but Grace Minturn, who had seven goals in the regular season finale at Redlands last week, had two goals in a 3-0 run to close out the quarter.

The run extended to 7-0 in the second quarter as the Athenas scored the first four goals, including the fourth and fifth from Ulmer and the third from Morgan. The fifth from Ulmer marked the 100th goal of her career as a junior, joining Minutrn in the 100-goal club this season. Stella Hansot capped off the run to give CMS a 10-goal lead at 12-2.

Summer Matsik added three goals in the second half and Ella Brown chipped in with two to help CMS extend the lead out to 22-6 by game's end.

Minturn finished with three goals and two assists, and Griffis had a team-high three assists. Minturn added three caused turnovers, while Chloe Klein had two, and Kate Larson had four ground balls. Julia Ryan had 18 draw controls to finish the regular season with 333, by far the most in the nation.

CMS and Pomona-Pitzer will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday for the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
