LA VERNE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team started the day with a six-run first inning in the opener to take an 8-3 win over Whittier, but the Poets ended the day with a six-run ninth in the nightcap for a comeback 11-6 win to come away with a split on Saturday at Ben Hines Field.
With the split, CMS moves to 21-6 overall and 11-4 in the SCIAC, winning its fifth straight league series after taking the opening game yesterday. Whittier moves to 9-18 overall and 3-12 in the league.
In the first inning of the opening game,
Alex Henderson started the scoring with a two-run double,
Rider Gordon had an RBI double, and
Slader Spoor capped it off with a two-run double. Gordon added another RBI single in the third as part of a two-run inning to make the score 8-0, and the Stags were able to take the 8-3 win.
PJ Wendler threw five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three to get the win.
Parker McGraw threw two innings, allowing two hits and striking out three to close it out.
Andrew Mazzone was 4-for-5 for the Stags, while Gordon was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In the nightcap, CMS trailed 3-1 in the fifth before Henderson tied it with a two-run single.
Bryce Didrickson then followed with a two-run homer in the fifth.
After Whittier tied it, Henderson had an inside-the-park homer to put CMS ahead 6-5 and the Stags were one out away from winning it in the night, but the Poets scored six times with two outs to earn the split for the day.
Henderson finished the nightcap 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Didrickson was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Nate Seluga and Gordon each added two hits as well.
CMS will be back in action for a three-game series next weekend with Pomona-Pitzer, starting with a single game at Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
