CMS Baseball Gets Run-Rule Win over Pomona-Pitzer to Start Three-Game Series

AZUSA, Calif. - Rider Gordon was 4-for-5 with four runs batted in, capping off the game with a walk-off three-run homer in the eighth to enforce the 10-run rule, as the No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team took a 15-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the first of a three-game series on Friday at Cougar Stadium.

With the win, CMS moves to 22-6 overall and 12-4 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer slips to 16-11 and 6-7 in league play.

The Stags led just 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, when Carter Bennett hit a solo home run to give CMS an insurance run. Gordon had an RBI single in the seventh and Blaise Heher added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 8-4.

CMS was then able to enforce the run rule with a seven-run eighth. Nate Seluga belted a three-run homer to push the lead to 11-4, and after Bryce Didrickson scored on a wild pitch, Gordon hit another three-run homer to end it.

The Sagehens led 1-0 after the first, but Dillon Martin hit a two-run single in the third to put CMS ahead to stay. Heher had an RBI single and Bennett had a RBI double in a three-run fourth that pushed the lead to 5-1, before Pomona-Pitzer closed it back to 5-4 in the fifth.

Dominic Rolla threw five innings to get the win for the Stags, while Parker McGraw threw three innings of relief to get the save.

The teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer.
