CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned one of the 21 at-large bids to the NCAA Division III Tournament and will open play against Buena Vista in a regional hosted by Wisconsin-La Crosse from Friday-Sunday.
The hosts from Wisconsin-La Crosse will play Bethany Lutheran on Friday, with the two winners and the losers facing each other on Saturday in the double-elimination tournament. Sunday will be the NCAA Regional finals for the right to advance to the Super Regionals, which would be against the winner of a regional featuring Endicott, Bridgewater State, Concordia (Texas) and Oswego State.
The Stags enter the postseason with a 31-12 record on the year, marking their third 30-win season in program history, including last year, when they set a CMS record with 32 wins. The first 30-win season came in 1972, while last season, the Stags earned their first NCAA bid since 1996, advancing to the regional finals before falling 6-5 in the ninth inning to No. 3 East Texas Baptist.
CMS finished tied for second in the regular season SCIAC standings, matching its highest finish since the 1990 team won the regular season crown. The Stags advanced into the winner's bracket with a 12-10 win over Pomona-Pitzer, before dropping close contests to La Verne (11-10 in 11 innings) and Pomona-Pitzer (9-7). All three teams qualified for the NCAA Regionals, with La Verne hosting a regional with Whitworth, Pomona-Pitzer and McMurry.
The Stags faced Buena Vista in the 2022 Tucson Invitational, with CMS taking an 18-6 win. Starting pitcher
PJ Wendler, who got the win, is the only current active member of the team who played in that game (senior outfielder
Jack Potter also played, but is out with an injury).
Start times for the regional at Wisconsin-La Crosse will be announced.
