Stags Baseball Uses Long Ball to Take Series Opener from Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Josh Jacobs was 4-for-4 with two homers, five runs scored and four RBI, Max Pemberton added a grand slam, and Bryce Didrickson hit a two-run shot as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team used four home runs to take a 17-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the first of a three-game series on Friday.

The win was the 20th of the season for the Stags, who improve to 20-8 overall and 10-6 in the SCIAC, while knocking first-place Pomona-Pitzer down to 19-9 overall and 9-4 in league play.

Jacobs hit his first home-run, a three-run shot, in the third to put CMS ahead 7-1. Didrickson's two-run blast came in the fifth inning to make it 9-2, and Jacobs hit a solo shot in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-3. Later that same inning, Pemberton went yard with two outs and the bases loaded to push the lead to 15-3 and help enforce the 10-run rule after seven innings.

Carter Bennett started the scoring with a two-run double with two outs in the first inning, and Rider Gordon closed out the CMS scoring with a two-run double in the seventh.

Kody Perry went five innings to get the win on the mound and improve to 6-1 on the season, while Max Brunngraber suffered his first loss for the Sagehens, falling to 6-1 on the year. Aaron Herst threw the final two innings for the Stags.

Bennett was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Gordon was 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Didrickson ended up 3-for-6 with his homer. Pemberton finished the day 2-for-4, including his grand slam.

The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Azusa Pacific.
