CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team was pushed by No. 12 Babson in the NCAA Quarterfinals, but responded to the challenge with a 4-1 win over the Beavers on Monday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS moves to 31-2 on the season, and 26-0 against Division III competition, while winning 31 matches in a row since dropping two matches to Division II teams on opening day (Feb. 14). Babson falls to 22-3 with the loss after an upset win to get to nationals.
The Beavers kept that mometum by winning the doubles point from CMS, with
Advik Mareedu and
Josh Kim winning for the Stags at No. 2. Babson took an early lead in singles, as the Beavers looked like they might challenge for another upset, but the Stags responded on every court.
Mareedu fell behind early in the first set at No. 1, but found his groove and took a 6-4, 6-0 win to tie the score 1-1.
Josh Kim then took a 6-3, 6-4 win to take the win at No. 4 singles and put CMS ahead 2-1.
Caleb Settles earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 after falling behind early in the first set as well, and
Tarm Rojanasoonthon picked up the clinch with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Warren Pham was ahead 7-5, 3-3 at No. 2 after rallying from way behind in the first set, and
Matthew Robinson had found his groove at No. 3 as well, earning a split 2-6, 6-3, before his match was halted.
With the win, CMS advances to tomorrow's semifinal round, when it takes on Case Western at 4 p.m., after the Spartans won a tight 4-2 quarterfinal over Chicago. CMS and Case Western played a close match at ITA Indoors earlier this year, which the Stags won 5-2. A win in that one would send CMS through to Thursday's national championship match at 5 p.m., which would be the seventh trip to the finals in the last 12 years for CMS.
