BEVERLY, Mass. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team fell behind early and never recovered as it fell to Endicott 15-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Super Regionals on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops the Stags to 35-14 on the season, but they will have the chance to bounce back with two wins tomorrow to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eastlake, Ohio.
CMS was in a similar position last weekend, needing to defeat Wisconsin-La Crosse twice to advance to the Supers, and were able to come away with 11-2 and 6-2 wins to move on to this weekend's series at Endicott.
Andrew Mazzone hit a solo home run, his 18th of the year, in the ninth inning, which spoiled a shutout bid from starting pitcher Charlie Hale, who improved to 13-1 on the season with a complete-game win.
Rider Gordon was 2-for-3 and
Carter Bennett 2-for-4 for the Stags, which fell behind 6-0 after the first inning, which was more than enough for Hale, who has a stingy 2.04 ERA on the year.
The second game of the Super Regionals will get underway tomorrow at 11 a.m. If CMS wins that contest, a second game will be played for the Super Regional title and the right to advance to Eastlake, Ohio for nationals.
