CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Andrew Mazzone of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned the Region X Player of the Year Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association, it was announced by both organizations today.
Mazzone was joined on the all-region first team by
Alex Henderson on both lists.
Dillon Martin was also first-team All-Region X from the ABCA, while
Carter Bennett and
Parker McGraw earned spots on the first team.
Mazzone finished the year hitting .496, tying the program record for highest batting average in a single-season while adding 18 homers and setting the CMS record for career homers with 38 in only two seasons. He added 52 RBI this season, while missing three weeks with an injury, and tallied an OPS of 1.602 on the year, which included a .979 slugging percentage.
Henderson hit 19 home runs and set a program record with 69 RBI, with 11 of his homers coming in the NCAA Tournament (seven games). He hit nine home runs in five games in the NCAA Regionals, and then hit two more bombs in the second game of the super regionals.
Martin batted .336 on the year with 31 extra base hits, including a team-high 18 doubles and six triples, to go along with seven homers and 58 RBI. He also committed only eight errors all season at shortstop, finishing with a .963 fielding percentage.
Bennett ended his rookie season with a .320 average, 10 homers and 41 RBI, and a .958 fielding percentage at second base. McGraw was 5-2 with a team-best 2.91 ERA out of the bullpen, striking out 60 and walking just 24.
CMS set a program record for wins in a season with 35, increasing its win total from the year before for the eighth year in a row. The Stags advanced to the Super Regionals for the first time in program history as well, after winning the regional hosted by Wisconsin-La Crosse.
