CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Brooke McKee had 17 kills in both matches, with only three errors combined, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team swept St. Olaf and Lake Forest on the second day of the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
Set scores wqere 25-17, 25-16 and 25-22 against St. Olaf, and 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 against Lake Forest. With the wins, CMS finishes its opening weekend at 3-0, after also sweeping Case Western on Friday evening. St. Olaf slips to 1-2 on the year with the loss, while Lake Forest falls to 0-3.
McKee had 17 kills in 31 attempts in the St. Olaf match with only one error, hitting .516. She then followed up with 17 kills and two errors in 33 attempts for a .455 percentage against Lake Forest, finishing 34-3-64 (.484) for the two matches combined.
In the first match, CMS used a 4-0 run to open up a 17-10 lead, keyed by three blocks from
Stella Gajar, two combined with
Phoebe Shorney and one solo.
Shae Delany then had three kills to help CMS push the lead out to 21-13, and the Athenas held on for a 25-17 win and 1-0 lead.
The second set saw St. Olaf jump out to an early lead of as many as four points. The Oles were still up 12-9, when the Athenas went on a 4-0 run, beginning with a McKee kill and ending with a McKee ace. CMS then used a 3-0 run to go ahead 18-14, capped by a
Solvej Eversoll kill, another 3-0 run to go ahead 21-15 on a McKee kill, and then a 4-0 run to finish off the set 25-16.
The final set was tight the whole way, with the Oles leading 20-18 late. Eversoll and McKee had two straight kills to tie it 20-20. The teams exchanged points to knot the score up 22-22, and then McKee put the Athenas ahead with a kill.
Samantha Riter followed with an ace to bring up match point, and the Athenas earned the win on an Ole error.
Delany finished with 11 kills in support of McKee, and
Mia Urosevic led the defense with 13 digs. Riter and
Hayden Lin each had 19 assists.
Riter had 18 assists in the nightcap, while Lin and
Shelby McIlroy each had nine. Urosevic reached double figures in digs again with 11, and Eversoll hit .545 (7-1-11) in support of McKee.
The third set was the closest, with Lake Forest using a 3-0 run to pull within 21-19. Eversoll answered with a kill, and Gajar and
Anna Ryan combined on a block to make it 24-19. After the Foresters fought off one match point, McKee finished it off with a kill.
CMS will be back in action at the Marty Petersen Invitational next weekend, when it will face Emory on Friday, and WashU and host Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday.
