CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Alyssa Fang and
Preslie Lampitt tallied goals in the second half as the No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit for the second time this season to earn a 2-1 non-conference win over Chapman on Saturday at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS improves to 5-0-1 on the young season, while Chapman slips to 2-2-1.
The Panthers struck for an early goal in the sixth minute, which held until intermission. At the 13:39 mark of the second half, the Athenas found their equalizer, as
Cate Lewison turned the corner on the right side past her defender and sent a cross into the box.
Fang then made a run up the left side of the penalty area and jumped in the air for a perfect one-time volley for her first collegiate goal in her sophomore campaign. Lewison also picked up her third assist of the weekend, after also assisting on both goals from
Jordan Yates in a 2-0 win over UC Santa Cruz on Thursday.
The Athenas went ahead with 19:48 to go in the contest, as they played a ball into the penalty area. Chapman attempted to clear, but the loose ball fell into the middle of the box, and Lampitt was able to flick it inside the right post for her second goal of the game.
Chapman had its best chance at an equalizer just one minute after CMS went ahead, when Casey Gilligan took a 20-yard free kick that she bent over the wall and on frame, but
Andra Marinescu was able to tip it over the bar to keep the lead.
The game also served as the Morgan's Message dedication game for CMS and Chapman, featuring a pregame ceremony (pictured below). Morgan's Message is a 501(c)(3) that strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics. It aims to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it opens SCIAC play with a home game against Whittier at 7 p.m.
