CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Nick Kennedy had 10 goals and 10 assists over two games, including eight goals in the opener and seven assists in the nightcap, to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team to a pair of wins on the second day of the Inland Empire Classic on Saturday at Axelrood pool.
Kennedy had eight goals and three assists as the Stags outlasted Concordia Irvine 18-12 in the first game of the day after trailing 10-9 at the half, and then tallied two goals and seven assists as CMS pulled away from Iona for a 22-12 win in the nightcap.
Thomas Walker had four goals and an assist in the Concordia win and added three goals and four assists in the nightcap.
Jeffrey Koretz tallied four goals against the Gaels, and
Stryker Scales added three.
Walker scored with 15 seconds left in the first half against Concordia to pull CMS within 10-9 at the break. Kennedy then knotted the score on the first possession of the second half, which was followed by a goal from Walker to give CMS the lead for good. Kennedy added another with 2:06 left in the third to make it 12-10, and
Luke (Bear) Weigle scored off a Kennedy feed to make it 13-10 with 1:31 left in the third.
Kaliq Khan stopped the run for the Eagles with 42 seconds left, but
Christopher Petrossian scored with nine seconds left in the third to give CMS a 14-11 lead heading into the final stanza. Kennedy started the fourth with his eighth and final goal of the contest, while
Nelson Harris,
Calvin Donat and Walker added fourth-quarter tallies.
Jake Taylor finished with nine saves, while holding the Eagles to just two goals int he second half.
The nightcap was tied 2-2 midway through the first quarter, before CMS scored seven goals in less than four minutes.
Asher Engelberg started the run, and Harris scored two in a row to make it 5-2 with 1:26 left in the first. Scales and
Gavin Netherton finished off the quarter with goals, and Weigle and Donavan Davidson each scored in the first minute of the second quarter to make it 9-2. The teams then traded goals before Kennedy capped off the half with his second to make it 13-6 at the break.
Taylor had seven saves in the first half, and
Chase Campbell picked up four in the second half. Scales and Kennedy each had three steals.
CMS will be back in action when it hosts Harvard at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
