Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Athenas Basketball Moves to 6-0 in SCIAC with 83-68 win over Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team roared out to a 31-13 lead after the first quarter and held off Chapman the rest of the way as it captured an 83-68 win over the Panthers on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.

With the win, CMS now stands at 12-2 and stays in first place in the SCIAC at 6-0, while Chapman slips to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Tanya Ghai led four players in double figures with 24 points, while Caleigh Edwards nearly had a triple-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists, to go along with five steals and no turnovers. Katie Resendiz added 19 points and four steals, while Haylie Wang chipped in with 13 points off the bench.

CMS jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed, with Renee Chong and Resendiz hitting baskets and Ghai hitting a fast-break three-pointer. A 9-0 run quickly took the lead from 11-5 to 20-5, with Ghai hitting her second three of the opening quarter to make it 18-5 and Wang scoring off a steal and pass from Laura Strenk to force Chapman to call its second timeout of the opening quarter with 3:58 still left on the clock.

Ghai and Wang had consecutive steals and fast break lay-ups to push the lead to 31-10 with 48 seconds left in the third, but Chapman was able to claw back in it with a 23-point second quarter, pulling within 48-36 at the break, before opening the second half with a three-pointer to get the lead to single digits.

CMS responded with a 7-0 run on a three-pointer and a jumper from Resendiz and a steal and lay-up from Chong to get it back to 57-41. The Panthers were able to close to 11 at the end of the third (64-53), but could never get it to single digits in the fourth, as the Athenas were able to pick up their sixth conference win in a row.

CMS forced 25 Chapman turnovers on the day, while committing only 10 of its own. The five CMS starters combined for 17 steals, with Edwards leading with five, Resendiz tallying four, Chong and Ghai earning three apiece, and Strenk adding two.

The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
