Athenas Basketball Outlasts Redlands in Overtime to Stay Unbeaten in SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior forward Katie Resendiz had six of her career-high 29 points in overtime as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team held off a comeback from Redlands to earn a 71-64 overtime win on Wednesday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

The win enables the Athenas to stay undefeated in SCIAC at 8-0 at the midway point of the conference schedule, while moving to 14-3 overall. Redlands slips to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in league play.

CMS led by as many as 13 in the third quarter, and was up by 12 with 6:40 to go before rallying all the way back to tie the score 57-57 on a free throw with two seconds left in regulation. The Bulldogs missed the second foul shot with a chance to win it, but earned the offensive rebound out of bounds with .8 seconds left. CMS, though, played strong defense off the inbounds pass and did not allow a shot attempt before the buzzer.

Resendiz opened the overtime session by burying a three-pointer from the top of the key on the opening possession. After Redlands cut the lead to one, Laura Strenk scored on a reverse lay-up along the baseline to get the lead back to three.

After Redlands knotted the score back up, Resendiz split two at the line to get the lead back and then converted a layup off a pass from Tanya Ghai to push the lead to three, before fouling out on the ensuing defensive possession.

Redlands split two at the line to cut it to two, but CMS came up with a big offensive possession as Laura Strenk handed the ball off to a curling Ghai, who got an angle on her defender and drove all the way to the rim for a scoop lay-up with 44 seconds left to stretch the lead to four.  Ghai and Caleigh Edwards each knocked down a pair of foul shots to get the lead up to eight points, before Redlands made the final margin 71-64 with a foul shot.

Edwards had a double-double for the Athenas with 13 points and 13 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Ghai had 14 points and four steals, one of which came off an inbounds pass with 41 seconds remaining in regulation and Redlands trailing by one. Haylie Wang was also in double figures with 11 points.

Resendiz' 29 points eclipsed her previous high of 24, which she set as a sophomore against Cal Lutheran. Her season high so far this year came when she had 21 points at Occidental.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer in a Sixth Street rivalry game at 7 p.m.
