CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Avni Udupa scored off a long cross from
Frankie Fragola with 8:48 left in regulation as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Whittier on Saturday evening at Nakasone Field.
With the win, CMS moves to 9-3-2 overall and picks up three big SCIAC points by moving to 6-2-1 in league play. Whittier falls to 3-11-1 overall and 1-8 in the SCIAC.
CMS controlled play for most of the contest, outshooting Whittier 21-6 and 13-3 in shots on goal, but Sofia Lopez had 12 saves to keep the Athenas off the scoreboard, with the post also denying a chance from
Elsie Lindeman early in the second half.
The Athenas finally got their breakthrough in the 82nd minute, when Fragola looped a long cross from near the left sideline towards the far post. Udupa crashed in from the weak side, and was the first one to it, one-timing it out of the air and re-directing it back towards the near post and in for her third goal of the season.
Andra Marinescu had three saves for CMS to get the shutout. Fragola and
Ava Allen tied for team-high honors with four goals.
The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Azusa Pacific for a non-league game at 7 p.m.
