ROME, Ga. -
Rebecca Kong came back from trailing 5-2 in the third set, and 3-0 in the tiebreaker, to earn a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 win over Sophie Lau of Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals of the ITA Cup on Saturday at the Rome Tennis Center.
Kong advanced to the ITA Cup finals for the second year in a row, after falling in the championship match last year to Matia Cristiani of Babson, who went undefeated against Division III opponents during her senior year. This time, she will face Caitlin Bui of WashU in tomorrow's finals.
Kong also dropped the first set in yesterday's quarterfinal round to Sahana Madala of Johns Hopkins, but came back for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win. The semifinals seemed to be following the same pattern, after Kong broke Lau's serve to open the third set.Â
However, Lau swung the momentum back and went ahead 5-2 in the third, with a chance to close it out. Kong, though, held for 5-3 and broke at 40-15 to get back on serve. After a Kong hold made it 5-5, Lau won a deuce point to get it to 6-5, but Kong held to get it to a tiebreaker.Â
Lau went ahead 3-0 in the tiebreaker, and was up 4-2 at the changeover, but Kong rattled off the last five points in a row to complete the comeback win. She also evened the head-to-head battle with Lau, who won the ITA West Regional matchup in Claremont two weeks ago.Â
The championship match will get underway tomorrow at 9 a.m. local time (6 a.m. Pacific) as Kong will try to add an ITA national singles title to the NCAA Doubles Championship she won last year with
Lindsay Eisenman. Â
