Luk Carries Caltech Men's Soccer to Upset Win over Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Matthew Luk had three goals and an assist to lead the Caltech men's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday evening at Nakasone Field.

CMS held its Senior Day before the contest, with the three members of the Class of 2027 honored - Eric Grossman-Glover, James Gomez and Alex Sondegaard. The Stags slip to 8-5-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the SCIAC with the loss, and Caltech improves to 6-8-1 and 2-7-1 in league play.

The Stags went ahead 1-0 early in the eighth minute, after Gomez had two shots saved by Beaver goalkeeper Ethan Hamel, and then his third effort from the right side of the goal deflected into the net.

The Beavers tied the score when Sam Mullen scored in a scramble off a corner kick in the 21st minute, and after that it was all Luk. He broke the tie on a penalty kick with 5:18 left in the half, after he dribbled 50 yards up the left sideline and was taken down in the box.

Luk then made it 3-1 in the 61st minute with a left-footed bender from the the top of the 18, then seven minutes later, dispossessed the Stags in the corner and laid the ball off to Mullen for his second goal. Luk made it a hat trick when he scored from just over midfield in the 86th minute as CMS was pressing forward, lobbing a shot over everyone and into the net.

Despite the loss, CMS will look to secure its SCIAC Tournament bid in the next week with games against Cal Lutheran at home on Wednesday night and at Whittier on Saturday.
