Athenas Soccer Honors 11 Seniors Prior to Regular Season Finale, Falls 1-0 to Occidental

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team honored its 11 seniors prior to the contest, and ended up falling on a late goal 1-0 to Occidental on Saturday at Nakasone Field.

CMS was already locked into the No. 3 seed for the SCIAC Tournament, which left the final result inconsequential for the Atjenas. Occidental was able to play its way up to the No. 4 seed wirh the win, which came on a goal from Bella Calemine with 2:11 left in the contest. CMS falls to 11-4-3 on the season and 7-3-2 in the conference, while Occidental improves to 6-10-1 and 6-5-1 in league play.

The Athenas honored its large Class of 2027 prior to the game, with Andra Marinescu, Frankie Fragola, Meghan Bartsch, Kateri Trujillo, Flora Glantz, Jordan Yates, Carmel Randolph, Ruby Fragola, Emily Bersin, Ava Allen and Echo Malinowski-Cunningham recognized before their final regular season home contest. Ten of the 11 seniors started, with Lexie Roth starting in place of the injured Bersin in the center midfield.

CMS controlled play for most of the contest, outshooting the Tigers 17-3 and having seven corner kicks to Occidental's one. The one corner kick for the Tigers produced the game's only goal through, as Jordyn Tribus took it and bent a curling ball into the top of the six-yard box. CMS was able to deflect it with a header, but it made its way to the far post, where Calemine settled it and put a high shot under the crossbar.

Avni Udupa and Roth each had two shots saved for the Athenas, with Roth having one stopped by an Occidental defender midway through the second half.

CMS will open play on Wednesday in the SCIAC Tournament on the road at either Cal Lutheran or Pomona-Pitzer, depending on the result of their contest later today.
