PASADENA, Calif. –
Sean Lee scored one goal and assisted on another just over a minute apart early in the second half as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team earned a 2-0 road win over Caltech on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, CMS moves to 6-3-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the SCIAC, while Caltech falls to 5-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first half that was evenly played, featuring just one shot on goal by the Stags (which was saved), the Stags took momentum early in the second half.
Daniel Zhu had a shot pushed wide for a corner kick in the 51st minute, and
Clayton Thomas had his shot off the ensuing corner cleared off the line.
After just missing on that opportunity, the Stags broke the ice just over two minutes later, when
Luke Allen played a cross into the box and Lee headed it in from inside the six-yard box to put the Stags ahead 1-0 at the 53:45 mark.
Just 1:06 later, senior center back
Eric Grossman-Glover made it 2-0 with the first goal of his career, working a give-and-go with Lee and depositing a 20-yard shot inside the left post. Caltech kept fighting and had a shot hit the crossbar in the 64th minute, and
Axel Jimenez came up with a save in the 71st minute to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Occidental for a big SCIAC match-up at 7 p.m. at Nakasone Field.
