SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Bell Zhou won in both singles and doubles as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned a 4-1 win over Division II Point Loma on Friday afternoon.
With the win, CMS now stands at 1-1 on the season with the loss a 4-3 defeat to Division I UC Riverside. The match was played up until the clinch, with two singles matches left unfinished once Zhou provided the clinch at No. 4 singles.
The Athenas took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, as Zhou teamed with
Ananya Sriniketh for a 6-0 win at No. 2 for the first point of the match, and Lindsey Eisenman and
Rebecca Kong securing the point with a 6-4 win at No. 1.
Rachel Garton picked up the first win in singles for CMS by taking a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 to stretch the lead to 2-0.
Leah Baroudi finished off a quick three-setter at No. 5 with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win to get the Athenas within a single point, and Zhou finished it off with a tight second-set win, taking a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4 to end the match.
Kong had found her groove at No. 1 singles when her match was halted, leading 5-7, 6-0, 3-0 in the third.
Shifali Dinesh had just started her third set at No. 3 after splitting the first two.
CMS will be back in action for its home opener next Friday against Brandeis (5 p.m.).
